Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the extent of employing artificial intelligence (AI) applications by Islamic Studies teachers at the elementary stage in the city of Bisha from their own perspectives. It also sought to identify the main obstacles hindering the implementation. The descriptive survey methodology was deployed and a questionnaire was used as the primary data collection tool following the verification of its validity and reliability. The study population consisted of all male and female Islamic Studies teachers in Bisha. A random sample of 265 teachers was selected, representing diversity in gender, academic qualifications, years of experience, and the number of AI-related training courses completed. The findings indicated that the use of AI applications in lesson planning, implementation, and assessment was at a moderate level. The study also identified fourteen major obstacles to the integration of AI in Islamic Studies teaching. The most prominent challenges included weak student ability, unsupportive work environment, lack of teaching experience, and poor technological infrastructure. Additionally, the results revealed no statistically significant differences in AI integration levels related to teacher gender. However, statistically significant differences were found related to years of experience in favor of more experienced teachers, academic qualifications in favor of those holding postgraduate degrees, and the number of training courses attended in favor of those who had completed four or more courses. In light of these findings, the study recommended the provision of ongoing training programs for teachers on the effective use of AI, improvements of the technological infrastructure in schools, and the development of a clear strategic framework to guide AI integration. It also emphasized the importance of raising teachers' awareness of the significance of AI to enhance its use in teaching Islamic Studies.
